The Secret Doesn’t Work for Us (I’ll Tell You Why)

I remember when The Secret dropped.

It was everywhere.
Books. Documentaries. Oprah.
Everyone was talking about the law of attraction:
“Think it. Feel it. Believe it. Receive it.”

And I believed it too.
I journaled like my life depended on it.
I visualized my dream home, dream job, dream partner, dream life.
And honestly? Some of it did come true.

But something never quite sat right.
It felt like there was a missing piece.
And when I began reconnecting with African spirituality—with my ancestors, with my roots, with Spirit, I finally understood what it was.

The Secret doesn’t work for us.

When I say us, I’m talking to my people.
Black folks.
Spiritual beings with ancestral memory.
People whose manifestation power is deeply tied to purpose, not just desire.

Let me break it down.

1. It Doesn’t Account for Destiny

Not everything you want is meant for you.
That car, that partner, that job—maybe it’s not aligned with your divine purpose.
And no amount of manifesting is going to override your soul contract.

Our ancestors knew this.
They didn’t chase, they listened.
They moved when Spirit said move.
They waited when Spirit said wait.
This idea that you can just “think it and get it”?
That’s actually ego. Not alignment.

2. It Makes You Over-Conscious

The Secret had me paranoid at one point.
Every stray thought felt dangerous:
“Oh no, I thought about something bad, what if I manifest it?!”

That’s not freedom.
That’s mental imprisonment.

Real manifestation isn’t about obsessing over every thought.
It’s about your overall frequency.
Your energy.
Your trust.
It’s about being grounded in truth, not frantic about control.

3. It’s Rooted in a Colonized Mindset

Here’s the big one:
The Secret teaches that whatever you want is automatically yours.
No accountability. No community. No Spirit.

That’s not how we move.

Our cultures—before colonization—were rooted in reciprocity.
In community.
In asking for guidance and waiting for the yes.
We don’t force our will, we align with a higher will.
We don’t chase, we attract by being in right relationship with the unseen.

So What Does Work for Us?

Destiny.
Spirit.
Ancestral guidance.

We manifest with purpose, not pressure.
With alignment, not anxiety.
With surrender, not obsession.

And when we do that?
We don’t need “The Secret.”
Because we’ve always known.
It’s in our bones.
It’s in our blood.

You don’t need to force your way into a reality that’s not yours.

You just need to remember who you are and where you come from.
